Longtime California trial staple Keker Van Nest & Peters LLP found success for a wide range of clients this year, winning a nationwide injunction against a presidential executive order, defending Arista Networks in a groundbreaking copyright suit and resolving a feud between two prominent San Francisco philanthropists.

With 85 attorneys in the Golden State, Keker is the third-smallest firm among Law360’s 2017 California Powerhouses, but its smaller size hasn’t held it back from taking on Goliath cases — even when it’s brought on late and a client is ready to take a matter to trial.

Anchored by high-profile trial lawyers John Keker, who founded the firm with a law school friend in 1978, Bob Van Nest, who’s gone to bat for the likes of California giants Google Inc. and Qualcomm Corp., and white collar and legal malpractice expert Elliot Peters, the firm’s attorneys pride themselves on being able to send a powerful message to opponents: If you’re up against Keker, you’re in for a challenge, said managing partner Steven Taylor.

“Because we are known for having a trial focus, we are hired for cases when clients are interested in, or realize they’re going to have to, try a case,” he told Law360. “With the cases we had [this year], each one has its own story.”
