Eyes on the Horizon: Litigators Serving as Managing Partners Discuss Managing Change in the Industry

Keker, Van Nest & Peters Managing Partner Laurie Carr Mims discusses balancing her litigation practice while meeting the needs of a growing firm in this week’s Litigation Daily column, which features the leadership insights of three litigators.

The column describes how Mims’ leadership style reflects the firm’s intense focus on being exceptional trial attorneys and how she balances an active litigation practice while leading a growing firm.

“A decade or so ago, we had three or four people taking lead roles over trials and business generation, and today that number has quadrupled,” she said. “The next five years are going to matter a lot as we professionalize and adapt how we operate.”

Mims also talked about the firm’s views on artificial intelligence, which she sees as an efficient tool for analysis, research, and routine drafting, but not something that will replace the firm’s fundamental value proposition.

“Our lawyers’ good judgment and experience will continue to have the final say in strategy and decision-making,” she said. “Clients will continue to need our services and ability to deeply understand and explain complex and highly technical arguments.”
