California Justices Won't Review Stay of Two Uber Contractor Cases

The California Supreme Court denied petitions by the state's labor commissioner and attorney general seeking review of lower court orders staying their cases alleging that Uber and Lyft misclassified drivers as independent contractors, putting off any direct ruling that impacts the companies' struggle to maintain the status quo.

The high court's Wednesday denials are the latest in a long, tangled battle between the ride-hailing companies and governmental powers in California over the companies' business models, and come months after an appellate court wrote the most recent major chapter in March by ruling a California's voter-approved ballot measure that allowed gig companies to classify drivers as independent contractors can remain state law.
