Kate Stein Folly represents businesses and individuals in all stages of criminal, civil, and administrative matters.  Her practice focuses primarily on white collar criminal defense, regulatory enforcement actions, internal investigations, and complex civil litigation.  She has represented clients before the United States District Courts, the United States Court of Appeals, and in negotiating favorable pre-litigation resolutions in matters involving the DOJ, FBI, SEC, CFTC, and various other agencies.  Kate has experience in matters involving wire fraud, securities fraud, insider trading, bribery, money laundering, FCPA offenses, and tax fraud.  She also has extensive experience in conducting sensitive investigations involving allegations of sexual misconduct and sexual harassment.

Kate maintains an active pro bono practice focused on criminal defense and post-conviction relief.  She has represented several clients through the Criminal Justice Act for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.  She has also worked extensively on a pro bono project dedicated to obtaining sentencing reductions for federal inmates who were subjected to enhanced consecutive sentences mandated by 18 U.S.C. § 924(c).  From 2021-2023, Kate was appointed as a Special Assistant District Attorney to the Westchester County DA to conduct an independent, post-hoc review of an investigation into a 2011 police-involved shooting.

Prior to joining Keker, Van Nest & Peters, Kate served as a law clerk to Judge Vernon S. Broderick of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.  Prior to her clerkship, Kate was an associate in the White Collar & Regulatory Defense Group at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York.  Kate earned her J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she was a Program on Corporate Compliance and Enforcement Fellow.  During law school, Kate served as an intern for the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the SEC’s Enforcement Division, and for Judge Ronnie Abrams of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.  Kate earned her B.A., summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, in English Literature from Hamilton College.
