Michelle Ybarra has been selected among California's Top Artificial Intelligence Lawyers by the Daily Journal. Ybarra has remained at the forefront of complex AI-related litigation since December 2019. Her initial case in this domain was highly technical, focusing on chip architectures used to train neural networks. Ybarra worked closely with her team and experts, dedicating time to study technical papers and materials, with a leading computer scientist as her instructor.

Currently, Ybarra is defending OpenAI in multiple copyright and class action lawsuits. The cases raise questions for using copyrighted works to train large language models and are expected to impact the future of generative AI and global interactions.

Ybarra also discusses her role in defending Google in a $1.6 billion patent infringement lawsuit filed by Singular Computing. This case involved allegations about Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which underpin its AI technologies. With the successful invalidation of some patent claims through inter partes review, the case concluded with a settlement just before closing arguments.

Ybarra notes the challenges of navigating litigation in a rapidly evolving field, where the legal landscape lags technological advancements. She highlights the emerging legal challenges facing the AI industry and anticipates the revolution will bring unforeseen legal challenges in the coming years.
